Background and Purpose of this Course
The purpose of the nonprofit Educate. Radiate. Elevate. is to help bridge the Achievement Gap by providing underserved students with tutoring. The Achievement Gap refers to persistent disparities in measures of academic achievement among students of different races and socioeconomic statuses. Research has shown that low-income students of color have historically performed lower on standardized testing than higher-income white students. The proposed reasons for these disparities in academic performance are multi-faceted and complex. However, research has shown that individualized and consistent tutoring is an effective means for providing more equitable learning opportunities, thereby helping to shrink the gap in achievement.
You have already participated in the roundtable for Teaching Metacognition, Executive Functions, and Interpersonal Skills. Those resources and strategies can be beneficial for students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. However, E.R.E. will be working with students who are facing a unique set of challenges because of their race, ethnicity, income, and experiences. In order to best serve these students, foster a positive learning environment, and promote the long-term success of the students it is essential that we are Culturally Responsive and Trauma-Informed.
The resources and strategies provided in this course are intended to help you better understand from where these students and their families are coming, prepare for the sessions, and respond to various common scenarios.
This is not intended to be a one-time lesson, but rather a continual learning experience that can be accessed with the provided documents as well as communication with the E.R.E. staff. We welcome your feedback on how to best support you as you support your students.
